Aculab’s digital network access product portfolio is available to developers who need to connect their communications solutions to public or private TDM networks. Aculab’s high performance, standards compliant range offers the essential attributes, including reliability and scalability, for both enterprise and telco grade solutions.

The worldwide protocol range and regulatory approvals have established Aculab as a key supplier in many global deployment scenarios.

The products have been designed to offer TDM digital network access in PCI, PCI Express (PCIe) and CompactPCI (cPCI) form factors. For packet network access and IP telephony support, see the information under media processing resources.

Benefits and choice
When selecting a digital network access board, planning of international product roll out should be fully considered. Key benefits of Aculab’s digital network access boards stem from the choice of product options and the extensive, worldwide protocol coverage, including SS7. The policy of enabling developers to download the telephony software options, as and when they need them under a cost free licence, continues.

Developers also benefit from Aculab’s operating system independent API, which makes it easier to migrate existing applications onto new platforms and hardware. The inclusion of new protocols is equally straightforward for applications that are to be deployed internationally. These attributes help developers and integrators to leverage existing solutions or bring new solutions to market quicker, with a faster time to money result.

Protocol coverage
The wide range of protocol firmware available includes many different types of common channel signalling (CCS), channel associated signalling (CAS), and multi-frequency (DTMF, MF, and MFC) signalling. In North America and some South East Asian countries, it is 1.544MHz T1-based signalling variants that are mostly deployed. Europe and the rest of the world use mainly 2.048MHz E1, ISDN-based signalling, but with a rich legacy of CAS and R2 derivatives where network infrastructures are still transitioning from analogue to digital. Public networks worldwide utilise SS7 (signalling system No. 7, or C7) variants.

The rich heritage of protocols available, and information on national and international SS7 variants supported, can be best appreciated by viewing the protocols and approvals pages.

Switching
To ensure maximum flexibility within applications, all boards offering digital network access support local voice path switching, as well as arbitrary switching to the various external connections and buses. This can be crucial when determining system traffic capacities.

Operating systems
Aculab supports a selection of operating systems as a result of customer demand – a demand that changes over time. The standard set of device drivers includes Linux, SPARC Solaris, Windows XP/2000 and Windows Server 2003. Further details are available on the software downloads pages.

Host independent approvals
In many countries it is possible to obtain host independent type approval, such that the board may be integrated into PC or server-based solutions without further telecom approvals being required – see the protocols and approvals pages for details. In regions where this option is not available, each complete customer solution will need to be submitted for approval and Aculab has experience in supporting integrators in gaining such system level type approvals.

Technical support
When customers need technical assistance as they design and construct their solutions, Aculab’s expert technical support teams are experienced and available to assist via telephone or email. In addition to a developers’ forum, Aculab also offers a self help knowledge base.
