Many national and international carriers are seeking outsourced solutions on both traditional TDM and next-generation VoIP technology platforms. Providers of outsourced switching solutions for telecom carriers worldwide, therefore, need to deploy integrated signalling and media gateways in their fixed and mobile networks worldwide.

Requirements for VoIP gateways in this scenario include: flexible routing; transcoding; and integrated SS7 functionality that will allow the outsourcing company to provide scalable and cost-effective interconnects between carriers from their strategic switching centres – points of presence (PoPs).

Outsourcing vendors are seeking gateways to integrate with their solutions, enabling those solutions to have an immediate impact for customers, and place them ahead of their competition. GroomerII, with its flexible routing functionality, transcoding, SS7-to-SIP capability, and scalable chassis options, provides carriers with a robust and reliable interconnection gateway that can be used to extend existing infrastructure, reduce costs and help deliver revenue generating services.

There is a growing market trend for customers to abandon proprietary solutions from traditional vendors and the tight functionality integration in GroomerII leads to cost efficiencies compared to standard TEM system blocks. Couple this with the responsive technical support available from Aculab, and carriers looking to extend their infrastructure to deliver an expanding list of services, such as VoIP DIDs, hosted IVR, and other SIP services, need look no further than GroomerII.

International VoIP carriers also deploy gateways to expand their global networks and provide valuable wholesale and retail next generation telephony solutions. Using GroomerII, carriers can deliver high quality wholesale interconnections, providing direct routes to countries worldwide. This means the effective deployment of innovative, advanced telecommunications solutions, such as VoIP enabled contact centres, and up-to-date retail services like prepaid calling boards and call back services.

Carriers implementing enhanced VoIP solutions need to be able to communicate with other carriers regardless of the type of networks they use. As they design their next generation networks and rollout new services, gateways providing SS7-to-SIP network connectivity enable the delivery of IP-based, IMS-ready services into legacy SS7 networks worldwide.

GroomerII is ideally positioned as a key building block for next generation solution deployments and can be confidently selected by even the largest carriers to fit into any type of advanced network development.

See figure 1 for an example of a typical deployment scenario.

In this example scenario, a centrally located regional facility hosts the telco switch and GroomerII as shown. Depending on the scale of the interconnection e.g., the number of E1/T1 trunks, originating and terminating access can be provided by a single GroomerII, or for essential redundancy and resilience, multiple GroomerIIs as illustrated; the choice is yours.
